Matilde Giglio's startup opens its first hospital in India: "We will treat millions of people."

“When we founded Even, we wanted to solve the structural problems that make the Indian healthcare system inefficient and inaccessible for millions of people. After simplifying access to primary care and diagnostics thanks to technology, today we are also taking a fundamental step in hospital care.” Thus Matilde Giglio , co-founder of Even Healthcare , an Indian startup founded in 2021 by the Italian entrepreneur together with Mayank Banerjee and Alessandro Ialongo, announces to Italian Tech the opening of its first hospital , in Bangalore, in the heart of the city on Race Course Road.
A hub for over 400,000 members and with annual revenues of $35 million, Even has redefined access to primary care in India thanks to a smart managed care model. Now, with the opening of its multi-specialty hospital, the healthcare startup is expanding its reach into secondary care, bringing an innovative healthcare model to the Indian market. This highly technologically advanced facility features 70 beds, operating rooms, and an intensive care unit.
Specialized care is provided in orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, gynecology, general surgery, internal medicine, intensive care, and chronic disease management. "Today, many hospitals only care for patients while they're hospitalized. We also care for them afterward, because that's when the quality of care is measured."
The new healthcare frontier. The Even modelEven's care model addresses a critical gap in the Indian healthcare system, which currently has one of the highest rates of medical inflation in Asia. The Indian healthcare market is enormous: valued at $372 billion in 2022, growing at a CAGR of 22%, yet private insurance covers only a tiny fraction of the population. Insurance products in India are unfavorable for citizens. India currently has 1.4 billion people, a middle class of 350 million, and nearly 60 million families go bankrupt for medical care . Patients go through hoops just to get basic care . Not to mention overworked medical staff, burnout is rampant, and costs continue to rise.

The number of people seeking health insurance is growing by 25% each year. Even offers families insurance for about €200 a year, a quality package that includes care from a family doctor and access to local clinics and hospitals, which they are building from scratch. It also promotes education on prevention and health promotion.
Why India?
We chose to build Even in India because there was—and still is—a unique opportunity: to design a healthcare system fit for the 21st century from scratch. A system based on prevention, where doctors are incentivized to keep patients healthy and not overprescribe to maximize profits. Technological innovation like artificial intelligence and robotics has already been integrated into our services since day one, but the real innovation lies in revolutionizing the incentives that drive the healthcare system, aligning them with patient well-being.
What does an innovative hospital mean to you?
The greatest innovation isn't in the walls, but in the way the hospital works. At Even, care begins before a patient becomes ill and continues long after they've been discharged from the hospital. Doctors are rewarded for helping patients stay healthy, not for performing additional tests. Discharge isn't the end; it's just another step in a lifelong care journey. For us, no one should feel alone in the healthcare system: our care managers handle the paperwork, insurance, and follow-ups, so patients can focus on their well-being. All with the added value of digital technology that cuts down on time and costs.

In India's private healthcare system, it's common for doctors to be rewarded based on the volume of procedures and investigations performed, often leading to unnecessary treatments. In India, patients are hospitalized two to three times more often than the global average. Even openly challenges this logic. "Distorted incentives lead to inappropriate care and negative patient experiences. Our goal is to remove these incentives and rebuild trust in healthcare."
In addition to clinical transparency, Even also simplifies the administrative experience: patients no longer have to navigate between departments or manage insurance paperwork. Support is provided by the Even Care Manager , a dedicated figure who follows each patient in a personalized and digital way. Everything is managed directly in the room or remotely (digital is key), making the discharge process seamless and timely. "We know that being hospitalized is emotionally difficult enough. We don't want people to also worry about the bureaucratic aspect or unexpected costs."
From electronic medical records to AI assistants
India's secondary healthcare market is currently fragmented between large tertiary hospitals, focused on complex and expensive cases, and small private clinics, often with subpar quality standards. Patients are thus forced to choose between elite facilities, which are inaccessible due to their high cost, and unreliable local clinics. Even Hospitals aims to fill this gap by offering smart, safe, and accessible care, with transparent pricing and the support of health insurance, in an environment that prioritizes doctor-patient continuity.
How does it work?
Patients can speak to our doctors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Virtually all the time. We have an efficient Electronic Medical Record system built from scratch on our platform, which collects all of a patient's medical information, replacing the traditional paper record. It contains test and examination results, reports, medical notes, and pre-existing health information. Not only that, but our app provides access to hundreds of thousands of hospitals and clinics with which we are integrated through our backend system. We use artificial intelligence to improve the work of our doctors and the efficiency of the services offered to patients. For example, medical history is contained in a digital medical record that is automatically updated before scheduled medical visits, and consultations are automatically annotated after the visit. Essentially, we offer a complete and up-to-date view of a patient's treatment journey, facilitating communication between healthcare professionals and improving the quality of care. This reduces administrative burdens, so staff can focus on patients, not paperwork. We also have an AI care manager, which is an AI chatbot that our customers can interact with at any time that provides medical advice based on our guidelines and their personal data.”
What's next?
"Today in India, secondary care is the most neglected segment. We are building an intelligent and ethical model that puts health, not profit, at the center of everything."
In the next 12 months, we will open two more hospitals in Bangalore and aim to open over 15 across India in the next three years. The goal: to revolutionize the secondary healthcare landscape in the country and bring excellent, accessible, and transparent hospital care to millions of people. “The opening of our first hospital is proof that our team has the courage to innovate where it really matters, changing the rules of the game and improving the patient experience . In just four years, we have grown to over 400 million members, we manage tens of thousands of care episodes every week, and now we are inaugurating our first hospital. This proves that, starting from scratch, you can build a transparent, sustainable, and scalable healthcare model capable of transforming the lives of millions of people .” Backed by international investors such as Khosla Ventures and Founders Fund, Even has raised over $50 million in less than three years.
